Cavities of Crystal Light: Electronically Injected Photonic Crystal Microcavity Light Source May Realize High-Efficiency Single-Mode LED's

A discussion of the basic properties of photonic crystals will be given and how they can be used in the design of light sources. Photonic Crystals are periodic arrays of dielectric materials that can be used to control the flow of light through space. In some cases they can be used to design resonant cavities that can contain and project light generated electronically within the cavity. We will discuss surface emitting light sources. These are formed in a dielectric slab that contains a periodic patterning that allows for the generation and projection of light perpendicular to the slab surface.
